Al Qaeda
Al Qaeda is a Sunni-Islamist terrorist organization founded by Osama bin Laden in 1988. It is responsible for numerous terrorist attacks around the world, including the September 11 attacks in the United States. Al Qaeda's goal is to establish a global Islamic caliphate, or state, ruled by Sharia law.
Al Qaeda was founded in Afghanistan during the Soviet occupation in the 1980s. Bin Laden, a wealthy Saudi businessman, was motivated by his opposition to the Soviet presence in a Muslim country. He recruited fighters from around the Arab world to join the mujahideen, or Islamic holy warriors, fighting the Soviets.
After the Soviets withdrew from Afghanistan in 1989, bin Laden returned to Saudi Arabia. However, he was angered by the Saudi government's decision to allow US troops to be stationed in the country during the Gulf War in 1991. Bin Laden was expelled from Saudi Arabia in 1992 and went into exile in Sudan.
In Sudan, bin Laden continued to build Al Qaeda into a global terrorist network. He recruited fighters from all over the world and established training camps in Sudan and other countries. In 1995, Al Qaeda carried out its first major attack, a bombing of a US government building in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
In 1996, the US government pressured the Sudanese government to expel bin Laden. Bin Laden then moved Al Qaeda to Afghanistan, where he was given庇护by the Taliban, a Sunni-Islamist militant group that controlled much of the country.
From Afghanistan, Al Qaeda planned and carried out the September 11 attacks in 2001. The attacks killed nearly 3,000 people and led to the US-led invasion of Afghanistan. Bin Laden was killed in a US raid in Pakistan in 2011.
Al Qaeda is driven by a radical interpretation of Islam. The group believes that it is carrying out a jihad, or holy war, against the West. Al Qaeda's ideology is based on a belief that the West is at war with Islam and that Muslims must defend their religion.
Al Qaeda's ideology has been criticized by many Muslims, who argue that it is a distortion of Islam and that it condones violence against innocent people.
Al Qaeda is a decentralized organization with no clear hierarchy. The group is made up of a network of cells and affiliates around the world. Each cell or affiliate is responsible for planning and carrying out its own attacks.
