Once upon a time, there was a clever farmer named Birbal who lived in the kingdom of Akbar. He was known for his wit and sharp mind. One day, a man came to Birbal for help. The man had sold his well to a farmer, but the farmer was not allowing him to draw water from it.
The man said to Birbal, "I sold the well to the farmer, not the water. So, he has no right to draw water from it."
Birbal listened to the man's complaint and then said, "I will help you."
Birbal called the farmer to his court and asked him why he was not allowing the man to draw water from the well.
The farmer said, "I bought the well, not the water. So, the water belongs to me."
Birbal smiled and said, "Very well. But if the water belongs to you, then you have no right to keep it in the farmer's well. Either you pay rent to the farmer to keep your water in his well, or you take it out of his well immediately."
The farmer understood that Birbal had outwitted him. He had no choice but to allow the man to draw water from the well.
The farmer was very angry at Birbal. He decided to take revenge on him.
One day, the farmer went to Akbar's court and said, "Your Majesty, Birbal has cheated me. He has stolen my cow."
Akbar was surprised to hear this. He called Birbal to his court and asked him about the cow.
Birbal said, "Your Majesty, I have not stolen the farmer's cow."
Akbar said, "But the farmer says that you have stolen his cow."
Birbal said, "Your Majesty, the farmer is lying. I have no need to steal his cow. I have enough cows of my own."
Akbar was not sure who to believe. He said to the farmer, "Do you have any proof that Birbal has stolen your cow?"
The farmer said, "Yes, Your Majesty. I saw Birbal taking my cow into his barn."
Akbar said to Birbal, "Birbal, what do you have to say to this?"
Birbal said, "Your Majesty, I admit that I took the farmer's cow into my barn. But I did not steal it. I only took it to protect it from a wild animal."
Akbar was surprised. He asked Birbal, "What wild animal?"
Birbal said, "Your Majesty, I saw a tiger in the forest near the farmer's house. I was afraid that the tiger might attack the farmer's cows. So, I took the farmer's cow into my barn for its safety."
Akbar was pleased with Birbal's answer. He knew that Birbal was a truthful and honest man. He said to the farmer, "You see, farmer. Birbal was only trying to protect your cow. He did not steal it."
The farmer was ashamed of himself. He apologized to Birbal and Akbar.
Akbar said to Birbal, "Birbal, I am very pleased with you. You are a wise and clever man. I reward you with a bag of gold coins."
Birbal thanked Akbar for the reward. He then bowed to the emperor and left the court.
The farmer was very angry at Birbal. He had failed to take revenge on him. But he had learned a valuable lesson: never try to cheat a wise and clever man.
