Coronation Street actor Anita Carey has died at the age of 75. The actress, who was best known for her roles in the soap and BBC One’s Doctors, passed away on Monday after a battle with breast cancer.
Carey first appeared in Coronation Street in 1978 as Brenda Summers, a victim of domestic violence. She returned to the show in 1996 to play Joyce Smedley, mother of Judy Mallett (Gaynor Faye).
The actress also starred in Doctors from 2007 to 2009 as Vivien March. Her other TV credits included Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads?, A Kind of Living, and The Royal.
Carey’s agent, Katie Threlfall, said in a statement Anita was a wonderful actress and a lovely person. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Coronation Street producer Iain MacLeod said Anita was a hugely talented actress who brought great warmth and humour to her roles in Coronation Street and Doctors. She will be greatly missed by us all.
Carey’s death is the latest in a series of recent cast departures from Coronation Street. Other actors who have left the soap in 2023 include Christina Boyd, Fiz Dobbs, Jacob Hay, Paul Foreman, Faye Windass, Aaron Sandford, Peter Barlow, and Spider Nugent.
The show’s 60th anniversary is set to air in December 2023.
